When dog’s cancer returns, his loving family helps him get around town so he can be loved by all

When Joey Maxwell and his wife walked into a kill shelter looking for a dog 8 years ago, they saw a Golden Retriever that was merely skin and bones. The couple adopted him and Maverick (as he is now called) and spent 6 beautiful years together. They made memories that will last a lifetime and did all of the things dogs and owners love to do together. But just two short years ago, Maverick was diagnosed with lymphoma.
The couple wasn’t about to let Maverick go when he wasn’t ready, so they completed his chemotherapy treatments and Mav was back and ready for more. The Maxwells helped Maverick fight this dreadful disease and they overcame it together. Unfortunately, the freedom didn’t last long.
Despite his outstanding recovery, Maverick’s lymphoma returned two months ago. The Maxwell’s were not going to let Mav go without a happy ending, however. Since he was too weak to sit up or walk on his own, Joey Maxwell decided to buy a wagon and take Maverick for rides around town.
Just because he was too sick to walk didn’t mean he couldn’t socialize and the family went all over town. Surprisingly, the entire community has stepped forward to greet Maverick and his dedicated family. Everyone in the neighborhood recognizes Maverick and comes to say hello.

“If we take him out, he barks at everyone who passes until they pet him because he thinks the whole world is there just to love on him,” Maxwell told CBS News. “We’re in a good place because we know how much Mav means to so many other people now and we know that he has felt every bit of that in return.”

What’s more is that the trips seem to have an outstanding effect on Maverick. What started as a way to let Maverick live out his last days in comfort turned out to be something that sparked recovery. He is feeling better all around and is able to sit on his own again. He’s getting stronger every day and soon, we hope, he’ll be able to visit everyone in town without needing the wagon.
